Risteilylle Maltalla - Boat Trips in Malta

As a tourist in Malta it would be really difficult to avoid being offered a cruise - especially the Strand in Gzira/Sliema area is packed with more and more desperate enthusiastic sales people offering cruises, up to the point that you are more likely to punch the next one rather than buying a cruise ticket. Sure, it's a totally touristy thing to do but it's a fun and affordable way to see some amazing scenery and spend the day at the sea.

The day trips typically start from Sliema harbour and head to the tiny Comino island and its famous Blue Lagoon and/or Gozo. You normally have a couple of hours free time on the island to do whatever you feel like doing (in Gozo this might include very quick sightseeing while in Comino you can't do much more than walk around the island and sunbathe/swim). Often the boat trip includes a "buffet lunch" but don't expect much - this means a portion of pasta served with cold cuts, some lettuce and bread. As dessert you will get an orange which is the advertised "fresh fruit". More importantly, the price often includes unlimited water, beer, wine and soft drink which already makes up for the price.

Blue Lagoon in all its glory

Speaking of price, depending a bit on the route, the boat and the level of food and drink, the normal prices vary between €20 and €50. If you can plan ahead, you can do it cheaper by using Deal Today where you can often find the cruises half price. You can buy the voucher on the website and then you have to call the company to make a booking at least one day ahead. Remember that some cruises that seem more expensive might include another little boat trip to visit the caves of Comino whereas on the cheaper cruises it's not included and you have the option of paying for the trip on-board, if you so wish.

Lots of boats in the Blue Lagoon

Olemme käyneet Cominolla useamman kerran tällaisella retkellä ja minusta se on ehdottomasti käymisen arvoinen paikka, sillä Sininen Laguuni on kerta kaikkiaan upea. Kuten monissa muissakin paikoissa Maltalla, täälläkin ylikansoitus on ongelma - Cominolla on pienenpieni hiekkaranta, joka kesällä on ihan tupaten täynnä sekä turisteja että maltalaisia eivätkä läheskään kaikki edes mahdu rannalle. Mikäli haluat välttää sillipurkki-fiiliksen - kuten me - kymmenen minuutin kävely mihin tahansa suuntaan rantaviivaa pitkin yleensä riittää pääsemään eroon ihmislaumoista. Varsinkin, jos et pelkää pientä kalliokiipeilyä, voit löytää ihanan rauhallisen privaattikallion, jolla palvoa aurinkoa ja uida ylhäisessä yksinäisyydessäsi.

We have visited Comino several times on a day trip like this and I definitely find it worth doing, as the Blue Lagoon is absolutely stunning. However like many other places in Malta, also Comino gets overcrowded - there is a tiny little sandy beach which gets absolutely packed both with tourists and Maltese visitors in the summertime. If you want to avoid feeling like a sardine in a can - as we do - it's normally enough to walk ten minutes to any direction along the coast line and the crowds disperse. Especially if you are not afraid to do a little rock-climbing to get down to the sea you can find a perfect little private rock where to sunbathe and swim all by yourself.
