We arrived in Brisbane with the car, found our hosts Jodie & Mick’s place relatively easily with the GPS and managed to return the car to the airport without any complications. Now that the stress of the driving was over we could relax and start exploring the city. Brisbane turned out to be a bigger city than we expected and actually this was the first time after Sydney that we were in an actual city with skyscrapers and all that. It was a nice change to have a bit of urban beat even though we are generally more nature-lovers than city folk.

Hanging out with the locals

Jodie had given us a map and some advice on what to see and do. We decided to start with the free (!) ferry that goes along the Brisbane River giving nice views of the city. We actually got there at a perfect time just before the sunset as this way we saw the city first in daylight, then at dusk everything was lit up and it looked gorgeous in a different way. As is typical for cities built by a river, Brisbane is full of bridges, each one more beautiful than the other. We stayed on the ferry throughout the round, after which we got off at Southbank. That was a lovely area with loads of restaurants and cafes, a lagoon with an artificial sandy beach as well as museums and galleries. It was a charming place to hang out people-watching and have dinner. We met up with Jodie when she got off work late that night and went home together with the bus.

The next couple of days we spent exploring the city but with a chilled out hanging-out approach, rather than running from one sight to another. Brisbane is a perfect place for that as it has heaps of nice places to visit but it’s not full of “must-see” sights. The best part is that many places can be visited for free. Jodie had recommended the Power House that used to be – well, the power house, but now it houses a cultural centre with theatre plays, exhibitions and so on. It was a really cool place to visit and the walk there through New Farm Park was beautiful, the park is well worth a visit in itself.
We also visited the Brisbane Museum that is housed at the City Hall. You can also go up to the clock tower that used to be the highest building in the city – obviously nowadays it is dwarfed by the skyscrapers. Also the Modern Art Gallery in Southbank was free to visit (as well as all of the above) so we also made it there and it was great, however we only had about an hour as they were about to close by the time we got there. There would have been so much more to see, we could have stayed a lot longer.

Botanical Gardens just before the storm

Also the Botanical Gardens were beautiful and full of birds and lizards – however while we were there a huge thunderstorm broke out so we had to run for cover among other people to a shopping centre. Luckily we made it there in time as soon the rain turned into hail (massive, like rocks falling from the sky!) causing loads of damage around the city. It broke windows in many houses including that of our hosts. The storm also messed up the traffic and we had to wait for an hour for the bus to get home, where the power was cut off and windows broken. We were supposed to cook for Jodie & Mick that evening, but without electricity we couldn’t cook anything so the dinner turned into a bowl of cereal. However we had nice long chat in the candlelight so it wasn’t all bad. At some point during the night the power came back so we could make lunch for the next day instead.

After two nights we changed couch as Jodie & Mick were getting other guests so we moved to Wons & Kate’s place to the north side of the city. We went to visit the XXXX Brewery (pronounced “four ex” which is a lot easier than ex-ex-ex-ex!) together. Jodie & Mick had very kindly given us free tickets for the brewery visit as they didn’t need them themselves so even this visit turned out to be free. It was an interesting tour even though the strict Australian health & safety rules applied again; you couldn’t take any pictures during the tour and you had to wear a silly protective vest and bring goggles with you, even though the brewery wasn’t even functioning over the weekend. However, the best part was of course the beer tasting in the end of the tour. Apparently XXXX doesn’t have a very cool image in Australia and the beer connoisseurs don’t appreciate it, it was fine for us though!
One day Wons & Kate also took us to the nearby Glasshouse Mountains for a little hike. The scenery was pretty different from what we had seen in Australia so far; it had been either desert or tropical rainforests but these forests reminded us of Andalucian landscape.
We had five lovely days in Brisbane, we found it a really cool city. From here we will continue a couple of hours down the coast to the hippie town of Byron Bay.
