Jälkeenpäin on hyvä jossitella, mitä jos olisimme selvinneet kaupunkiin tarkoitettuna päivänä - emme todennäköisesti kuitenkaan olisi olleet tapahtumapaikalla, sillä yövyimme downtownin alueella muutaman mailin päässä emmekä varmaankaan olisi raahautuneet sille nimenomaiselle osalle Stripiä country-konserttiin. Joka tapauksessa, kun aamulla olimme suuntaamassa Greyhound-bussiasemalle Los Angelesin päästä ja silmiin sattui uutiset joukkosurmasta, piti kiittää karmaansa ettemme olleet väärässä paikassa väärään aikaan.
It shouldn’t come to anybody as a surprise that Las Vegas is absolutely insane. Of course I expected it to be crazy but still Las Vegas hit me in the face with its sheer unashamed bling, manic noise and incomprehensible amount of blinking lights. Due to happenstance we didn’t get to Las Vegas on 1st October as we had planned. That happened to be the day of the worst mass shooting in US history on Las Vegas Boulevard, known as Strip. Afterwards it is easy to wonder about what-ifs, what if we had been in town on the day - most likely we wouldn’t have been at the scene anyway as we were staying in the downtown area a few miles away and probably wouldn’t have gone to the Strip to a country music concert. In any case, when we happened to see the news in the morning while heading to the Greyhound bus station in Los Angeles, we had to thank our lucky stars that we had not been in the wrong place at a wrong time.

Fremont Street

Hengailimme kasinollakin huviksemme, vaikkemme halunneet tuhlata rahaa pelaamiseen. Onneksi ohikulkeva mummo antoi meille 42 sentin edestä cash-out-pelirahaa, kun ei jaksanut itse pelata niin pienillä panoksilla, joten pääsimme kokeilemaan kolikkopelien taikaa. Voin sanoa, että sinne meni koko summa.

Drinking beer under the watchful eye of the Las Vegas' finest

Our hotel was located on Fremont Street which in itself is an overwhelming attack on all senses. This short pedestrian street was like you had stepped into some crazed parallel reality filled with blasting party music, flashing lights, artists sporting outrageous outfits and drunken tourists. Whatever you imagined of Las Vegas, it is just that and then some. Flashy casino hotels everywhere, strategically located DJ stages with “dancing DJ’s” who were more than half-naked young ladies playing party music, above our heads zip-lining daredevils and tourists drinking their beers or cocktails from plastic glasses gawking at all this and dancing on the street... You wouldn’t have guessed that 24 hours before a terrible tragedy had taken place in this city. Las Vegas was living and partying on like any other day. We could not resist the fun-loving atmosphere and joined the party, drinking beer and dancing on the street like the others. Of course we also had to hang out at the casinos as well, although we didn’t want to waste money on gambling. Luckily a passing elderly lady gave us her cash-slip worth 42 cents, as she didn’t feel like playing with such small stakes, so we got to try out the slot machines. As is to be expected, we lost the whole lot.

The only reminder of the tragedy was the ubiquitous hashtag #vegasStrong

The following day we decided to do something else than just partying and we had a car booked, so we drove about an hour into the desert to see the Hoover Dam. This is the most famous dam in the US on the border of Nevada and Arizona on the Colorado River and its power plant produces a great deal of electricity for the residents of Nevada, Arizona and Southern California. You can do a tour of the dam and the power plant at the whopping cost of 30 USD per person but we didn’t find the idea that interesting, so we just went to see the dam from both sides. On the way towards the Visitor Centre there is a free parking lot, from which you can walk until the nearby bridge with excellent views of the dam. By continuing past the Visitor Centre you can also drive on the dam itself and find more free parking after a few hundred metres. This outing took us about half a day, after which we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing by the small pool of the hotel.

Illaksi olimme varanneet lipun Cirque du Soleilin Mystere-esitykseen Treasure Island-hotellissa.

A little piece of Venice in the middle of the desert!

For the evening we had booked tickets to see Mystere Show by Cirque du Soleil. Las Vegas is known also for its incredible entertainment options and many hotels and agents sell discounted last minute tickets for various shows. We wanted to see something by Cirque du Soleil and managed to get the tickets for the same day for 70 USD when the normal price would have been around 100 USD per person. Every little helps! In the evening we headed out to the Strip for the first time to see the show at the Treasure Island Hotel. We had about an hour and a half before the show so we decided to check out the nearby bits of the Strip and find something to eat as well. The Strip is considerably more upscale and expensive than the downtown area and this is where you will find all the famously pompous hotels; Venice canals, pyramids of Egypt and the Eiffel Tower of Paris. We decided to check out the Venice canals as it was just across the street, so we thought that would be easy-peasy. It turned out that one does not simply cross the road on the Strip - the distances are really deceiving and just getting across the 12-lane road requires multiple combinations of escalators and overpasses. Finally we made it there and the canals certainly were a sight to behold. Afterwards we headed into a gigantic shopping mall hoping to find reasonably-priced options for dinner from the food court and after eating could hardly find our way out of there. When we finally got out it was high time to head into the impressive theatre of Treasure Island.
The show itself, like everything in Las Vegas, was overwhelming. I was absolutely mesmerized b the amazing feats of the performers, which really makes you wonder about the limits of human body and what these incredibly talented and disciplined artists can achieve. Sometimes I felt there was just too much going on at the stage at any given time as you just couldn’t take it all in. It was strictly prohibited to take any photographs so I cannot share any pics with you but trust me, it was magnificent! We had a great night and the show was definitely worth its price!
On the way across the road...

Kaksi yötä Las Vegasissa riitti meille oikein hyvin ja seuraavaksi lähdimmekin ihan erilaisiin maisemiin: Zionin kansallispuistoon!
Two nights in Las Vegas were certainly be enough for us and the next day we headed out to rather different scenery: to the Zion National Park!

  1. Moi,
Yksi vieno muutosehdotus: saisiko tekstin riviväliä isommaksi? Nykyistä on vaikea lukea.

  2. Kiitos kommentista ja palautteesta! Pitääpä yrittää jatkossa isontaa rivinväliä. Oletettavasti teksti näyttää eriltä eri laitteilta, mistä syystä en ole itse havainnut sen olevan vaikealukuista - minulla riviväli näyttää ihan ok:lta, mutta ehkä jollain muulla laitteella se on turhan tiheää.
